I saw a dead hare© GERALD ENGLAND
by the side of the road
over Kiplincotes
It may have run
into the path of a car
or died of some malady
indigenous to hares
Drawing near a flock of birds
flew off into trees
Through my rear-view mirror
I saw them return
to feed their winter hunger
on the meat of the corpse
The one is dead
so the others may live
