Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester

PICCADILLY GARDENS, MANCHESTER

fiercely competing
for old ice-cream cones
pigeons fly down
from their perch
on the roof of the ladies loo
to vie with a solitary sparrow
that hides in the flowerbeds

over the heads
of single mums
couples cuddling on the grass
quietly kissing
and jaded travellers
who rest on benches
a cabbage-white flutters by

the noise of nearby traffic
and the hoot of trams
barely penetrates above
the gentle cooing
of the pigeons
in this City Centre haven
where the ratrace stops
for a minute or two

Incident in Oldham

INCIDENT IN OLDHAM

they come over
the bridge
from town

SHUT UP
she shouts
you've got yr fags
you've got yr booze
you've got yr wallpapering
you've got yr tea
WHAT
   MORE
     DO
        YOU
          WANT?

she pulls
her warm lined coat
around her
stalks off

shirt-sleeved
he moves
the sagging plastic bag
from hand to hand

the young lad
tags
on to the empty hand.

Searchday Thursday

SEARCHDAY THURSDAY

(On Thursday November 20th, 1986 the search resumed on
Saddleworth Moor for victims of the "Moors Murders")

                    I

Hattersley has a quiet look today
swept by the showers and the south-west wind
people wait at bus-stops still joking,
but at the Catholics' coffee-morning
the talk is of Ian and Myra,
of bitter resentment and a little hope
for the unrest of twenty-one years
will not lie down so easily.

                   II

noontime — a rainbow
reaches from Mottram — dark clouds
over Saddleworth

                  III

High above Dovestones
sixty police in orange suits
cordon off moorland,
dog-track across the heather scrub.

Half a mile away at the mobile caf'
where the Pennine Way crosses the road
ITN and others are parked —
watching, waiting, reporting.

It will not be a short time
for those who have waited twenty years;
their worst fears unconfirmed
their heartaches buried deep.

Whatever is found
beneath the imprisoning peat
not everyone's hope
will find release.
