Under MacGillycuddy’s Reeks

UNDER MACGILLYCUDDY’S REEKS

under MacGillycuddy’s Reeks
rain pours relentlessly
sheep scatter as vehicle approaches
a three-way junction
two leading to where cars are banned
unless they come with four feet
smoke rises from the fire
where a tinker is encamped
yellow flowers bloom in grass
growing down the middle of roads
that climb and twist above the top
of raging waterfalls and cross
gaps between mountainsides
passing places are precarious and few
mists and clouds curl over the peaks
until we reach a remote bar
over lunch we watch the world news on TV
while the locals converse in Gaelic

Clinging to the Valley

CLINGING TO THE VALLEY

screes of shale
remain where
slag-heaps rose

the machinery
and the railway line
are gone

banks of bleak homes
some boarded up
seem to slope nowhere

in the Station Café
they laugh and gossip
tell tales of holidays
and how nice it is
to get back

rain streams
relentlessly
on rows of pigeon lofts

over the mountain
where the last
driftmine
still works
life takes wing

St Ninian's Cave

ST. NINIAN'S CAVE

Past giant rhubarb and bluebell banks
the path stepstones the stream

Marsh marigolds grow
beneath tall, fungi-clad trees

Beyond the pebble-strewn beach
the cave penetrates the cliff

From ledges of sea-thrift
water drips over the entrance

Up the multi-creviced rock
a spider climbs

My son lifts a placed pebble
to find a shiny tiny five-pence piece

The dog sniffs seaweed entangled
in the flotsam of a consumer age

St. Ninian does not hide here now

Over in Whithorn they exhume his age
and parade it for the paying public.

Nidderdale

NIDDERDALE

Bedraggled daffodils line the lanes
unnerved by April snows.
Only the curlew crying on the fell,
the short-eared owl stationed on his post,
know that summer still will come
as surely as the growing lambs will go.

By the lake where a myriad mosquitos hum,
only the bravest rabbit boasts
of the ability to foretell
how strong will be the wind's abuse,
how many elms will no longer grow
to offer shelter to the homeless crow.
