Still Life

STILL LIFE

                 After the baby has gone
                 to bed    there remains
                 a bright square mat.
                 Beyond a jumbled rattle
                 of six chained bangles
                 a pink teddy bear lies
                 face down guarded by
                 a blue black-nosed dog
                 The guarded fire warms
                 the room in which
                 a television plays
                 moving colour to the air
